History Milestones: The goal of Ottawa Salus Corporation has always been to improve the well being of people with serious mental health problems. One fundamental way to do this is to provide a home.
1977
Incorporation of Ottawa Salus Corporation
Rental of apartments.
1979
Purchase of Group Home on Cooper Street: 10 residents - CMHC funding.
1984
Purchase of Group Home on Crichton Street: 12 residents - CMHC funding.
1988
Opening of Fisher Avenue Rehabilitation home: 20 residents.
New services added - recreation and rehabilitation.
Federal/Provincial funding, Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing
1993
Staff began working with clients not living in Salus housing.
1994
Salus joined RCMS (Regional Case Management Services).
1995
Separation of support services from housing services.
Staff relocated from houses to Salus head office.
Housing services governed by Landlord and Tenant Act.
Salus created new position of Property Coordinator.
All one bedroom apartments (City Living) move from agency lease to direct lease with tenant.
Reduction in number of agency leases from 20 to 10.
1997
Tenants at Cooper and Crichton Group Homes receive single room accommodation. Number of spaces drops from 22 to 14.
Purchase of house on James Street: 3 bachelors and 1 two-bedroom unit. No government assistance. Down payment made with fundraised dollars.
1999
Purchase of house on Flora Street.: 2 bachelors and 4 one-bedroom units.
Purchased with a grant of $90,000 from the Ministry of Health and donations of $78,900 accumulated by Salus through fund-raising in the community.
Converted from Rooming House to Apartment Building with RRAP grant.
Grand Opening officiated by His Worship Bob Chiarelli Mayor of Ottawa
2000
Purchase of 14-unit apartment building on Lebreton Street North, all one-bedroom units. Salus received $200,000 from the Community Foundation of Ottawa-Carleton, and a capital grant of $401,500 from the Ontario Ministry of Health’s Homelessness Initiative to assist in the purchase of the building.
2001
Building of the Millennium House on Gladstone (19 bachelor units). Land donated for $1.00 and funding (671,880.00) received from the City of Ottawa.
Purchase of 10-unit apartment building on Churchill Avenue, all one-bedroom units.
New service added: Occupational Therapy
2002
Millennium House Grand Opening (January 2002) officiated by His Worship Bob Chiarelli Mayor of Ottawa and Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, C.C., C.M.M., C.D., Governor General of Canada.
Purchase of two apartment buildings on Rosemount Avenue, a total of 42 one-bedroom units.

2003
Purchase of apartment building on Dorchester Avenue (5 one-bedroom units and 1 bachelor)
Fisher: Enhanced Rehabilitation Program (# of residents reduced to 15, single bedrooms)
2004
Acquired ownership of house on Larkspur Drive from Ottawa Valley Autistic Homes (OVAH) via a transfer of property to the MOH and an assignment to Salus.
Opening of Larkspur Group Home (5 female residents - single room accommodation)
Conversion of two rental apartments into teaching/respite apartments (James St. & Rosemount Ave.)
2005
Salus began providing property management services to CMHA (20+ units). This arrangement ended in 2006. Rebuilding of the Salus Millennium House following the April 26, 2005 fire began late in the year and was completed in June 2006. Salus Board of Directors approved the sale of the house on James Street. The house was sold in 2006.
2006
Salus developed 40 apartments and new office space at 313 Athlone / 2000 Scott Street and celebrated with a grand opening in October 2006.
